And so we embark on yet another return to the Premiership after an absence of just one year. But there is an underlying malaise in football which is harming the game and could eventually, if it has not done so already, destroy it for the ordinary working class fan. Huge sums of money and the inevitable greed and corruption that follow the stench of cash mean that the fan who turns up at the gate is ignored and unwanted. Television companies now dictate when teams will play and what income they will receive whilst gate receipts constitute a minor part of their revenue.
Much of this cash is siphoned off by the players and their parasitic agents. Good players fetch astronomical transfer fees and wages and mediocre players are payed a king's ransom as they hawk their trade from club to club and have no interest in which team they play for, as long as the price is right.
The very people whose job it is to nurture the game at grass roots level, such as the Football Association, use this cash to build football mausoleums with executive seats reserved for the rich whilst the lifetime supporters of the clubs on the pitch are priced out and locked out. All of this whilst the game is alowed to wither away on the pitches of the towns and villages from where the game emerged.
As for the Blues, who have not won a notable trophy since their foundation in the 1870's we, as ever, travel in hope. In "Keep Right On To The End Of The Road" we have the most inspiring football anthem in the land and one day we will reach our happy abode.
